BAE Systems on Monday confirmed that it is has trimmed 314 jobs at its Fridley campus due to recent U.S. Department of Defense spending cuts.

BAE blamed the layoffs on the Defense Department’s June decision to cut the manned ground vehicle portion of its Future Combat Systems program, which included a cannon BAE was working on in Fridley. The program was cut because, among other reasons, it “did not adequately reflect the lessons of counterinsurgency and close quarters combat [learned] in Iraq and Afghanistan,” according to a June news release from the Defense Department.

The Business Journal reported last month that BAE placed about 650 employees around the country on paid leave as a result of the stop work order, however it wasn’t clear how many workers in Minnesota would lose their jobs.

“BAE Systems deeply regrets having to reduce its workforce, but given circumstances beyond our control, we are left with no other choice. The company will continue to aggressively pursue future opportunities in order to maintain market share,” according to company spokeswoman Kelly Golden in York, Penn.

London-based BAE has about 105,000 employees worldwide and posted sales in 2008 of about $34 billion. It had about 1,450 employees in Fridley as of mid-July.
