Fort Bliss officials have announced a hiring freeze and layoffs that could cost as many as a hundred temporary and contract workers their jobs.
A Post spokeswoman says the first layoffs, focused mainly on temporary workers, will be effective later this month.
She says that contracts, including those for grounds and building maintenance, also will be scaled back and soldiers will take over some of the services affected.
She says similar budget cuts are being implemented at Army posts around the country.
Post officials estimate that between 40 and 100 employees will eventually be laid off.
The post is trying to trim about $10 million in operating expenses.
Last week, Fort Hood said it is instituting some cost-cutting measures as the Army tries to stretch its funding to cover the cost of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan at least until mid-summer.
The post announced it has “already taken significant internal steps to help manage existing funds through the end of the fiscal year.”
The post is completely freezing civilian hiring and effective immediately, Fort Hood also plans reductions in custodial contracts, on-post housing referrals, grounds maintenance contracts, pest management contracts, government vehicle contracts and Visual Information contract support.
CongressionalDaily, citing an e-mail circulated by Army Vice Chief of Staff Richard Cody, reports the Army plans a gradual restriction in spending in early June followed, if necessary, by deeper cuts if Congress doesn’t send an emergency supplemental funding bill to the President before the July 4th recess.
CongressDaily reports that if the supplemental isn’t passed by mid-June, the Army will release some temporary civilian workers and if the measure isn’t passed by the end of the month, contract employees including recruiters would be released.
