HANFORD - Fluor Hanford is offering most of its 3,600 employees the opportunity to apply for voluntary layoffs as the Fluor contract ends and new contractors take over Hanford work.
Employees would be eligible for one week’s severance pay for each year they have worked up to 20 years. They also could receive a year’s health insurance, with some restrictions.
Fluor Hanford does not have a target number for the reduction in staffing, said Judy Connell, Fluor Hanford spokeswoman. Numbers are evolving with the winner of the new contract for support services announced earlier today.
Applications for voluntary layoffs will not be accepted from firefighters, firefighter captains and security police officers. Other applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The voluntary layoffs will give new contractors at Hanford an accurate roll of available employees, Connell said. It also will provide another option for employees, not all of whom are expected to be hired by the two contractors taking over the work under Fluor Hanford’s expiring contract.
CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. will take over the cleanup of central Hanford Oct. 1. and a team led by Lockheed Martin will take over support services for the Hanford nuclear reservation Jan. 1.
