Federated Department Stores Inc. plans to eliminate 595 jobs at Hecht's headquarters in Arlington during the first two weeks of May, according to documents filed this week with the Virginia Employment Commission.
The positions range from entry-level staff members to executive management, including five senior vice presidents, 74 assistant buyers, five construction supervisors and one model. Clerical staff members face the largest reduction, with 259 jobs cut. Other job cuts include managers and merchandise coordinators.
Federated also notified workers at three other chains that their jobs would be ending -- 582 at Filene's in Boston, 367 at Robinsons-May in Los Angeles, and 265 at Foley's in Houston, said Jim Sluzewski, a company spokesman.
In September, Federated announced that it planned to eliminate 1,033 corporate positions at Hecht's and close its headquarters. More than 5,100 other jobs across the country will also be phased out as Federated shuts down headquarters of the chains it acquired when it bought May Department Stores Co. last year.
Macy's spokeswoman Elina Kazan said yesterday that she was unsure when the next round of job cuts would occur. In its filings with the Virginia Employment Commission, Federated said it expects the cuts to take several months to complete.
Federated has said it plans to interview May employees who are interested in new jobs; some workers have already moved into those positions. The company plans to convert all of the former May chains, including Hecht's, into Macy's or Bloomingdale's by September.
Harold Kretzer, manager of the dislocated-workers unit at the employment commission, said he has spoken with the company about providing unemployment services for its workers, including job-skills assessment, training and counseling.
