More details are known about eBay's planned layoffs, with up to 60 positions at risk. The company had announced a restructuring in September that included news that Stephanie Telenius, head of global product and North America, would depart the company. Valleywag is reporting today that eBay plans to lay off fewer than 60 workers that would fall principally within the product and technology areas, news that was also picked up by the AP and Dow Jones newswire.
According to the September announcement, eBay is creating a combined global product and technology team to be led by Mark Carges, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. The company also announced at that time that Dinesh Lathi would lead a combined seller and buyer organization.
Earlier this month, an eBay spokesperson replied to AuctionBytes' inquiry for more information about layoffs in an email: "On September 21 we announced that we were evolving our Marketplaces organization to continue driving progress and innovation on behalf of our sellers and buyers. In line with the reorganization changes we announced, we expect to make small staff adjustments designed to build a quicker, more streamlined organization. Specifically we're creating a combined global product and technology team that will allow us to innovate more rapidly, deliver the tech stack and create a better end-to-end customer experience."
In the meantime, eBay Germany laid off hundreds of workers due to the creation of a new "eBay European Competence Center for Customer Service" in Dublin, where 100 new positions were created. eBay had laid off 700 workers in Vancouver, Canada, effective last month. eBay cut 10 percent of its global workforce late last year.
