The country's economy will soon be suffering another blow. CNN reported that freight carrier, DHL, announced 9,500 job layoffs as it plans to cease air and ground delivery services in the United States by January 30, 2009. DHL, however, will run air delivery services between the United States and other countries. The DHL layoffs are just another symptom of a sick U.S. economy. The DHL news of layoffs comes the same day that Circuit City announced the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

DHL layoffs and UPS/FedEx: Employees affected by DHL layoffs may want to make the jump to the competition.

The DHL announcement may prompt employees affected by the DHL layoffs to make the jump to UPS or FedEx for job opportunities if they wish to stay in the same line of work. The UPS website offers a page where prospective employees can apply for work and check the status of their application. UPS' site indicates that for most people start out with UPS as a part-time package handler, though corporate jobs may be available depending on location. The UPS site does offer a job search function to search for employment with UPS by entering a zip code or state to narrow the search.

FedEx may also be a good choice for laid off DHL employees to transition to in the near future. FedEx offers a job search tool on its site allowing users to search for jobs across the country in various job categories or job seekers can view all employment opportunities in their state.
