The union representing Verizon workers protested layoffs at the company Wednesday, picketing at a residential site in Holbrook.
Members of Communications Workers of America Local 1108 in Suffolk said 126 Long Island workers, including field technicians who do line work, installation and repair, were laid off Wednesday.
Michael Gendron, business agent and political coordinator for Local 1108, said, "We have a contractor up here from Georgia" hired by Verizon to do underground work that "we feel we should be doing."
Union officials said 54 people were terminated in Suffolk and 72 in Nassau. In July, Verizon said it would cut more than 8,000 employee and contractor jobs nationwide from its wireline business by year's end.
Verizon spokesman John Bonomo said the company has offered voluntary buyouts, encouraged employees to apply for openings in other states and turned to layoffs as a last resort. He said any outsourcing was done within agreements with the union.
