Los Angeles - The Writers Guild of America picketed in front of Fox Plaza Friday, encouraging News Corp. COO Peter Chernin to "be a hero" and help settle the strike that began Monday.

Closing down the Avenue of the Stars in front of the building in Century City " famous as the Nakatomi Plaza in 20th Century Fox flick Die Hard " near Fox Studios, the overwhelming message from pickets was: "Let's get back to the table."

Chernin could have been singled out because of remarks made to reporters and analysts on Wednesday http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6498730.html that News Corp. could save money during the strike and noting Fox's broadcast lineup, heavy in animated and reality fare, could fare well in the ratings against reruns or replacement shows.

Speakers included the heads of the writers guild, the Screen Actors Guild and Jesse Jackson. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to be there but was dealing with an oil spill in the northern part of the state.

Writers complained about retribution from the studios. Seth MacFarlane, creator of Fox's animated Family Guy, said that on Wednesday, the second and a half day of the strike, all of his lowly paid assistants were let go by the studio. He compared it to a bully slapping your children and telling you it was your fault.

Shawn Ryan, creator of FX's The Shield, confirmed that his assistants were notified Wednesday that they would be laid off Friday. His assistant producers were laid off Wednesday. The Shield is finishing up production of its 12th and final season.

MacFarlane pleaded with members of the crowd to pay his assistants' salaries.

Paul Haggis, who was in the midst of writing the next James Bond movie, predicts that any mediator in the strike would have to come from either the producers or the writers' sides " as opposed to Bill Clinton or other outside names being mentioned.

Haggis predicted a lengthy strike.
