HARTFORD, CT - Officials at Connecticut Natural Gas informed employees Friday of impending layoffs at the company.
Union officers from CNG and Southern Connecticut Gas said they’ve been deluged by calls from fellow employees who are shocked by the letter from the company.
The company’s CEO said declining sales, higher health care and pension costs and the overall recession are forcing the company to lay off workers.
A CNG spokesman said the numbers won’t be finalized for another couple of weeks, but the union president told Eyewitness News that as many as 30 of the company’s 240 employees could be laid off.
“We are at the bare bones … can’t go any lower,” said Union President Rob Eubanks. “We believe these layoffs pose a danger to workers and consumers.”
A CNG spokesman said safety and reliability are the company’s No. 1 priorities.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said the Department of Public Utility Control sets staffing levels for CNG and SNG. He said he’s asking for immediate hearings to stop the layoffs.
