Bay Shipbuilding Co. of Sturgeon Bay has informed the state of Wisconsin that it is adding 10 more employees to its layoff of more than 400 workers.
The manufacturer of marine vessels, dredges, dredging support equipment and bulk cargo self-unloading systems told the state Department of Workforce Development in August that it was laying off 405 workers by Oct. 30 because of slow business conditions. It warned at the time that more job cuts could come.
The latest round of job separations is expected to occur around Jan. 22, 2010, Bay Shipbuilding said in a mass layoff notice filed with the agency.
The company said it continues to "aggressively" seek new business in an effort to mitigate layoffs.
Bay Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Fincantieri Marine Group LLC of Marinette, had previously made a small number of temporary layoffs at the Sturgeon Bay facility that were expected to be less than six months in duration. However, recent business conditions necessitated an extension of the earlier layoffs, as well as the additional furloughs, according to the company.
