JELD-WEN, which manufactures doors and windows, has extended temporary layoffs at its window division facility at 811 Factory St., Hawkins.
The company had implemented a series of temporary layoffs beginning January 19 that affected 247 employees, who remained eligible for company and unemployment benefits. Company policy, and a collective bargaining agreement with union workers, calls for those who have not been recalled to active employment after six months to be terminated. JELD-WEN has therefore extended the period to nine months for employees in Hawkins and has proposed a similar extension to the union representing the plant's union employees.
"We took these actions to demonstrate our hope that by the end of September we could return as many laid-off employees as possible to active work," said Teri Cline, director of corporate communications, in a statement. "We can't promise that we will be able to do so, but that is our desire if business conditions improve."
JELD-WEN, which is based in the state of Oregon, filed the information with the state Department of Workforce Development to comply with the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification Act and state laws.
"In our notice to employees, we stressed that the WARN notice is required by law and must be given now, and does not mean that their employment with JELD-WEN is permanently ending," Cline said. "There are still several hundred employees actively working at the plant, building windows and doors to meet the current levels of demand."
