ANDALUSIA, AL — Georgia-based Shaw Industries has announced it will layoff employees at its plant in Andalusia. The exact number of workers affected was not disclosed. About 1,300 people work at the south Alabama facility.
A company executive tells the Andalusia Star News that most of the reductions will be made through natural attrition — that is, turnovers and retirements. The company said current economic conditions, including a slow down in the U.S. housing market, prompted the decision.
Layoffs also are planned at 70 other plants operated by the Dalton, Georgia, based company.
Shaw is subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, and is the world's largest maker of carpet and floor covering.
