BELLEFONTE, PA - Bolton Metal Products in Bellefonte announced late Wednesday it's laying off about 80 employees, which is about 35 percent of its workforce.

"I'm really concerned with that many people losing their jobs," said Larry Rider, a Centre County resident and Bellefonte business owner.

The Chamber of Business and Industry in Centre County (CBICC) said manufacturing jobs like those at Bolton -- formerly known as Cerro Metal Products -- typically pay well and provide benefits. Now, employees could face an uphill battle finding jobs with similar pay.

"They traditionally find jobs in service and retail sectors that are at a lower wage and typically without benefits," said John Coleman with the CBICC, who added this could affect business in Bellefonte and Centre County.

"These are new dollars that would come into the local economy and churn as employees spend throughout the local economy," Coleman said.

Rider owns Rider Insurance Agency, and he fears the ripple effects of these layoffs.

"We have a lot of Bolton employees as customers, and losing them is a potential," said Rider.

The layoffs will take effect on Dec. 31.
