Verizon plans to cut 8,000 more jobs in the second half of 2009, a roughly 3.6 percent reduction in its work force.

New York-based Verizon (NYSE: VZ) made the announcement Monday, along with reports of a 7.6 percent decline in profits. The company already has cut 8,000 jobs in the past year.

At the end of 2007 Verizon Wireless employed 2,100 people in the Nashville area, including at the company’s call center in Murfreesboro and at its regional headquarters in Brentwood.

Verizon’s profits in the second quarter were $3.16 billion, or 52 cents per share, compared with $3.4 billion, or 66 cents a share for the second quarter of 2008.

The company said last week it had added 1.1 million wireless customers in the second quarter of 2009.
