United Airlines is cutting its U.S. flights by 17 percent and its fleet by 100 planes; axing its low-cost Ted carrier; and eliminating as many 1,600 jobs as it tries to deal with high fuel prices.

Chicago-based United had been in merger talks with Tempe-based US Airways Group Inc. Those discussions stalled, however, and a merger is no longer being pursued.

United said Wednesday it will cut its North American flights by 17 percent by 2009. It also will retire 100 older jets and scrap Ted, which was aimed at competing with Southwest Airlines and other low-cost carriers.

Airlines are taking these and other significant measures in battling high fuel costs and tight operating margins.

United and Ted operate out of Terminal 2 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
