Spirit Airlines is closing its Detroit area reservations call center, eliminating 131 positions by Aug. 31, airline spokeswoman Alison Russell said.

The Miramar-based airline will outsource its reservations to Planation-based PRC.

Spirit had closed its Miramar reservations call center in March, laying off 25 workers, and consolidating at its Detroit area operation.

The decision to close that center was an evolving one, Russell said, and is geared to ''meet the needs of customers,'' she said.

''We're looking for the ability to scale up during periods of high volume and scale down when there is lower demand,'' she said. ``And it's something we just can't do on our own.''

Russell declined to comment on the financial ramifications. Spirit had leased a building in Michigan on a month-to-month basis, she said.
