Whirlpool Corp. of Benton Harbor, Mich., said Monday it will lay off 360 workers from its facility in Fort Smith effective Nov. 2.

The lay off is part of a 700-person job cut that was announced last October, which was supposed to happen during the first half of 2008.

The cuts come as the kitchen appliance maker moves production of side-by-side refrigeration products to Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, and in addition to the more than 900 job cuts announced since December 2006, when Whirlpool said 730 positions would be lost as production shifted south of the border.

The plant currently employs about 2,900, a representative from Whirlpool.

Corp. said. Before the layoffs began nearly two years ago, Whirlpool was Fort Smith's largest manufacturer, employing nearly 4,600 workers.
