ATLANTA - Furniture Brands International Inc, which is grappling with weak sales and looking to revamp its retail distribution system amid an industry slowdown, said on Tuesday that it planned to close eight company-owned Broyhill and Lane stores, cutting 83 jobs.

The four Lane stores and four Broyhill stores to be closed are in the metropolitan St. Louis area, the company said. The jobs of workers at the closed locations will be eliminated, along with certain other posts at warehouse facilities and the company's general retail offices in St. Louis.

Furniture Brands, which also makes the Thomasville, Henredon and Drexel Heritage brands, is based in St. Louis.
