Borders is closing its Grove City distribution center and laying off 130 employees, the company announced yesterday.

The center, which processes and ships all of Borders' music and movie products, will close by the end of next year.

In early 2008, Borders will begin transferring operations to the company's three other distribution centers, in California, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Consolidating distribution centers will make shipping faster and more efficient, said spokeswoman Mary Davis.

The out-of-state centers, ranging in size from 350,000 to 600,000 square feet, have the excess capacity to handle an increased amount of work, unlike the Grove City facility, which is 172,000 square feet.

The Grove City center, 3900 Gantz Rd., opened in 1996. It is equipped to process multimedia products exclusively and ships them to more than 500 Borders stores in the United States and overseas.

Employees were told of the closing yesterday and have been offered bonuses, severance and job-placement assistance.

Borders stores will not be affected by the distribution change. The company, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., operates more than 1,200 stores under the Borders and Waldenbooks names.
