Thomas Built Buses will cut 190 jobs from its local work force of nearly 1,600 people, the High Point-based company said.
The first cuts were made Monday at the school bus manufacturer's Surrett Drive plant in High Point, and layoffs will continue throughout the month.
Thomas Built, which is owned by Daimler Trucks North America, is one of the largest employers in High Point. Company officials blamed the weak economy for a slump in new orders.
