The news that Onex Corp. will buy Eastman Kodak Co.'s health imaging group, rename it Carestream Health and in so doing add 500 jobs to its current 800 is a blessing for our economy.

Furthermore, thanks to the decision by Kodak Chairman and CEO Antonio Perez to sell the health imaging group, Kodak now can focus on its two core businesses: consumer and professional digital photography, and printing.

Likewise, Robert M. LeBlanc, chairman of Carestream Health and managing director of Onex, can now expand his company's core competency.

A team of economic development professionals provided Onex with the incentives to bolster its business case for expansion in Rochester. The County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency, the city of Rochester, Empire State Development, and Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. pulled this package together in just eight days.

Daniel Gundersen, the new upstate chairman for Empire State Development Corp., who has been on the job for less than a month, played a significant role in supporting this team. We can see that he means business — new business in Rochester. This victory is proof-positive that Gundersen and his team have the will and wherewithal to get the job done upstate.
