MANSFIELD - The Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation on South Illinois Avenue will close in the spring, resulting in the loss of 21 salaried and 62 hourly jobs.
Employees learned Tuesday the corporation plans to stop production at the Mansfield operation before the end of the second quarter.
"This transformation has included streamlining the company's operations in order to create efficiencies while providing quality products and services to our customers," said Mike Mullin, director of media relations and public affairs for the corporation.
Mullin said human resource professionals are working with employees to assist them with benefits and employment questions.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. is the largest producer of cardboard box materials in North America. In January, the Chicago-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to The Associated Press.
The corporation employs 22,000 people working at about 150 facilities across North America and in Asia.
Stone Container built the Mansfield corrugated plant in 1950.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation formed in 1998 when St. Louis-based Jefferson Smurfit Corporation merged with the Chicago-based Stone Container Corporation.
Mike Greene, president of the Richland County Economic Development Corp., said the news is dispiriting.
"This is one that had been rumored, given the fact the parent company had filed for bankruptcy. This is one that is not a surprise although it is a disappointment," Greene said.
