Rite Aid will shut down its distribution center in Newnan, Ga., and cut 297 jobs by the end of September to “improve operational efficiency.”

The Camp Hill, Pa.-based drug store chain bought the Newnan facility in June 2007 when it acquired 1,800 Brooks Eckerd stores and six distribution centers. The company said at the time of the acquisition that once all of the Brooks Eckerd stores were integrated into Rite Aid, it would consolidate the distribution activities of its 14 distribution centers.

The 194 stores served by the Newnan distribution center will be served by other Rite Aid distribution centers.

Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) runs nearly 4,900 stores in 31 states and had $26.3 billion in sales in 2008.
