RALEIGH - A privately held company that performs contract clinical-research trials plans to expand its work force by nearly 1,100 employees by the end of 2011, state officials said yesterday.

INC Research Inc., which already has about 360 employees in Wake County, expects to hire an additional 1,093 workers in the Raleigh area and possibly at branch offices in Wilmington and Charlotte, according to the terms of an incentives agreement approved by a state panel.

The company performs customized clinical trials for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies - primarily on therapeutic products, with a special emphasis on pediatric research.

INC Research is expected to spend $19.3 million over the next four years on the expansion. The company could receive cash grants of $14.8 million over nine years if it reaches 90 percent of employment expansion, investment and salary projections.
