Peabody To Close Mine, Cut 80 JobsSt. Louis Business Journal
October 5, 2009
Peabody Energy plans to close a surface mine in southwestern Indiana in November and eliminate 80 jobs there.
Peabody expects the mine to run out of coal by the end of the year, said Meg Gallagher, a company spokeswoman. About 50 workers will continue to work at the site’s preparation facility.
Affected workers could seek other jobs with Peabody, which has four other mines in southwestern Indiana and plans to open another next year.
St. Louis-based Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU), led by Chairman and Chief Executive Gregory Boyce, is the world’s largest private-sector coal company with 2008 sales of $6.6 billion. Its coal fuels 10 percent of all U.S. electricity and 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
