LORDSTOWN OH - The recent good mood at revitalized General Motors plants in northeast Ohio's blue-collar Lordstown has turned somber with yesterday's news that about 1,000 workers will be laid off.

The president of the local union says the plant will still operate with three shifts, but the staffing reductions will be completed by Jan. 20.

GM recently had a celebration at the plant to announce plans to build the Chevrolet Cruze there in 2010. It also makes the Cobalt and Pontiac G5 fuel-efficient cars.

The cutbacks will affect 850 of 3,400 jobs at the assembly plant and 162 of 1,100 jobs at the fabricating plant.

United Auto Workers officers say they are frustrated that there's nothing they can do to change the sour economy.
