Kohler Co. said Thursday that it is cutting 455 jobs at its headquarters in Kohler because of declining sales.

The affected employees, who are part of the global power group, kitchen and bath group, and corporate operations, were notified of their status earlier today and include 357 production and 98 administrative positions. Kohler will remain Sheboygan County's largest employers with about 6,300 workers.

Kohler, which makes plumbing fixtures, small engines and generators, and operates hospitality businesses, said the work force reduction is one of "several cost containment strategies to properly align the business with the decrease in sales activity," according to a company press release. The company said the recession is continuing to hurt housing, manufacturing and consumer spending.

Affected employees are eligible to receive unemployment insurance and outplacement assistance services, while administrative employees will receive severance packages.
