CARMEL, N.Y. - A California drug company says it will close a factory in Putnam County that employs more than 500 people.

Watson Pharmaceuticals said Wednesday that it saved more than $30 million last year by closing factories in Phoenix and Puerto Rico. A factory started production in India this year.

It said efforts to make its operations more efficient would continue this year and would include closing the plant in Carmel by the end of 2010.

The company, based in Corona, Calif., makes a wide range of branded and generic drugs, including treatments for low testosterone, overactive bladder, nicotine withdrawal and prostate cancer. It earned $38.4 million in th
