Toyota announced plans Friday to double the size of its engine plant in Huntsville with a $250 million expansion that will add another 300 jobs.

Toyota officials said they plan to increase the number of V-8 engines built at the plant for the Toyota Tundra and Sequoia SUVs. The company last year announced it would expand the Huntsville operation to include production of V-6 engines for the Tundra and for the Toyota Tacoma pickup.

Toyota Motor North America senior Vice President Dennis Cuneo said there are currently 365 employees at the plant in north Huntsville and the two expansions will increase the total number of workers to about 800.

"This expansion will allow us to build more of the full-size pickup trucks that our customers demand," Cuneo said.

Bernard Schroer, executive director of the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association, called the Toyota announcement a significant event for Alabama's growing automobile manufacturing industry.

"The numbers suggest that in the next two years Alabama will be in the top two in vehicle manufacturing in the southeast," said Schroer, also vice president for research at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

He said Alabama has a chance to catch up with Tennessee and trail only Kentucky. He also said he expects a major impact of this growth will be enjoyed by small businesses, such as machine shops, that will be needed to supply the manufacturing plants.
