MINNETONKA, Minn. - UnitedHealth Group Inc. has laid off up to 300 of its more than 35,000 workers nationwide in what a company executive called "a natural process" that reflects the ongoing changes in the health care industry.

The layoffs, which occurred Monday, included a wide range of positions and were scattered throughout the country. The insurer did not announce the job cuts, which were reported Tuesday by the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune.

"With more than (35,000) employees nationwide, we constantly make adjustments in services and personnel to better serve our customers," said Mark Lindsay, United's vice president and director of public communications.

Lindsay did not have a precise number of how many employees were let go, but said the company was in the process of hiring several thousand new employees.

"We are hiring many more than are leaving," Lindsay said. UnitedHealth Group has between 5,000 and 6,000 employees in Minnesota.

Lindsay didn't say how many of those Minnesota workers, if any, were affected by the layoffs.

UnitedHealth, based in Minnetonka, is the nation's largest health maintenance organization, serving about 20.2 million customers through all its business units.
