Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to fire workers at an assembly plant in Normal, Illinois, to reduce expenses, weekly industry journal Automotive News reported, citing Chief Operating Officer Hideyasu Tagaya.
Tagaya, who assumed the post last week, declined to say how many jobs will be eliminated, Automotive News said.
Japanese analysts expect Tokyo-based Mitsubishi to eliminate more than 10 percent of the plant's jobs this year, Automotive News said. Tagaya said the cuts are part of a U.S. cost-reduction plan scheduled for completion by September, Automotive News reported.
The plant produces the Mitsubishi Galant, Endeavor, and Eclipse, and the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus, the journal said. It employs about 3,000 people and produced 174,000 vehicles in 2003 operating at 73 percent capacity, Automotive News said.
