Rubbermaid plans to bring 100 new white collar jobs to Mecklenburg County when it moves a food container division from Ohio, say county economic development officials.
But Phillips and Huntersville Town Manager Jerry Cox said company officials have told the town it plans to move its Rubbermaid Food Service Products Division to the Pizzagalli Business Park, off Interstate 77 in Huntersville.
The division, headquartered in Wooster, Ohio, sells food containers for restaurants for food preparation and storage.
"We are so excited," said Huntersville Mayor Kim Phillips, adding that the town north of Charlotte shouldn't be viewed as a bedroom community for the city.
Town Manager Cox said Huntersville and Mecklenburg County offered incentives valued at $170,000 on the expectation that the company will invest about $5 million and create about 100 jobs and add more over time.
Huntersville is also home to several hundred jobs in Newell Rubbermaid's Irwin tool division, which sells hand tools and power tools. With the jobs from the food service products division, Newell Rubbermaid will be one of the town's largest employers, Cox said.
An official announcement was expected later today.
Newell Rubbermaid is a Fortune 500 company based outside Atlanta. It was formed by the 1999 merger of Newell Cos., a home products company, and Rubbermaid, which had well-known household brands. It had $7.8 billion in sales last year.
Its brand names include Calphalon and Panex cookware and Graco strollers and car seats. It also sells office products, tools and cleaning supplies.
