March 23, 2005
Alcoa is announcing plans to cut 2,000 jobs over the next year. The aluminum company says it will streamline its operations in North America, Europe and South America as it strives to become more competitive.
The cuts will affect about 1.5% of Alcoa's 131,000 workers in 43 countries. Alcoa CEO Alain Belda says eliminating jobs is always a difficult decision and one that's not taken lightly, but he adds it's a necessary step to put the company in the best competitive position.
Alcoa also has announced that it's selling its stake in a Norwegian metals and energy group for about 870 million dollars.
