FORT WORTH, Texas -- A federal report says Fort Worth-based American Airlines cut more jobs last year than any other airline.

The U.S. Transportation Department says American cut about 2,900 positions in its domestic operations last year. Houston-based Continental Airlines ranked second with 2,400 job cuts last year.

On a percentage basis, U.S. Airways saw the most job losses -- cutting 2,000 jobs, or 8 percent of its workforce.

American's cuts totaled about 4 percent of its workforce.

American spokeswoman Sonja Whitemon said the job losses were unavoidable even though the airline has been able to reduce costs. The carrier has said it's been squeezed by high fuel costs and intense competition from discount airlines.
