Raytheon Missile Systems is considering adding up to 275 jobs to its Louisville operation at Technology Park to build more Phalanx Weapon Systems for the U.S. Navy.

The state approved Raytheon for tax incentives to add $10.1 million in payroll through the new hires. Raytheon already overhauls the Phalanx in Louisville, employing 348.

The Phalanx is a high-tech Gatling gun that can target and destroy incoming missiles and aircraft. Following the Oct. 12, 2000, attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, Raytheon billed the Phalanx system as a defense against swarm attacks from small boats that could threaten larger naval vessels.
