MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. - A new contract between Servicom and cable giant Comcast could bring as many as 700 new call center jobs to the Rock River Valley over the next three years, company officials said.

Under the new contract, Servicom will be responsible for surveying Comcast customers who recently had digital cable or high-definition television installed.

Servicom currently employs 300 people and has yet to determine how many jobs it will need to fill initially, according to human resources manager Katherine Libby.

The Machesney Park call center is owned by JNET Communications, a privately held New York company.

"Over the next three years, we want to perform so well that we not only receive a contract extension, but we are attracting other companies as well," said David Jefferson, JNET president and chief executive officer.

Since its parent company acquired AT&T Broadband last year, Comcast Cable has become the nation's largest cable provider, with 21.3 million subscribers.

Servicom will not be affected by the federal "do not call" list because call center employees will be contacting existing Comcast customers, rather than pitching products to random consumers, company officials said. Consequently, Servicom has not cut jobs as some telemarketing companies have been forced to do since the federal registry took effect.

The unemployment rate for the Rock River Valley in September was 8.1 percent, compared with the state average of 7.1 percent.

Wages for customer service representatives at Servicom begin at $8 an hour, with bonuses and pay increases based on performance.
