Infinity Property and Casualty Corp. plans to consolidate its four U.S. call centers into one national operations center in Birmingham, a move that will create 500 jobs in the city.

The Birmingham-based auto insurer announced Tuesday that the center will be located at the former Vesta Insurance Group headquarters building in Liberty Park, which is within five miles of Infinity's headquarters.

Infinity operates call centers in Birmingham, Cerritos, Calif., Alpharetta, Ga., and Irving, Texas. Infinity CEO Jim Gober said the company is encouraging employees to transfer to Birmingham with the consolidation and expects many will.

There will be 600 jobs at the operations center, 500 of which will be new to Birmingham, company officials said. Infinity will have 1,100 employees in Birmingham once all the new jobs are filled. The Birmingham City Council approved $900,000 for a parking deck at the operations center Tuesday.
