Hyatt Corp. announced Friday that its Boston-area housekeepers laid off last month will be offered jobs with an affiliate of United Service Cos., a janatorial, maintenance and security services conglomerate.
The positions would be in the Boston area and would match the employees’ Hyatt pay rate through the end of 2010. Hyatt, based in Chicago, would extend their health benefits through March 2010.
Former employees can choose to decline the jobs and receive job training and stipends through March 2010 or until they find new employment.
“We are committed to supporting all of our associates, especially when they are negatively affected by business decisions made necessary by the most difficult economic environment in decades,” said Phil Stamm, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Boston and chair of a local Hyatt management task force formed to assist the displaced workers, in a statement. “Every housekeeping employee who wants a job will have one. That’s our promise.”
The announcement is an attempt to resolve a standoff between Hyatt, which abruptly laid off dozens of housekeepers at three hotels in Boston and Cambridge, and labor and government leaders, including Gov. Deval Patrick, who threatened a statewide boycott of Hyatt unless the workers were found employment.
While the company fervently defends the move to outsource housekeeping to a Georgia firm, Stamm did express remorse for the implementation of the change.
