Report: Ford To Cut Nearly 24,000 Jobs By End Of 2007Associated Press
July 16, 2006
DEARBORN, Mich. -- According to published reports, Ford expects to cut between 22,000 and 24,000 hourly jobs in North America by the end of next year.
The Detroit News quotes unidentified company sources as saying Ford will exceed its goal of shedding up to 30,000 hourly workers by 2012.
A company spokesman said she couldn't discuss job cut estimates for the end of 2007 because Ford has released estimates only through the end of this year.
Ford expects to cut up to about 12,000 hourly workers this year either through attrition or by workers taking early retirement or buyout offers.
The American automaker is about six months into a North American turnaround plan that calls for closing 14 plants by 2012 and cutting up to 30,000 hourly workers.
