HALIFAX, N.C. - A food processing company plans to create 200 jobs over the next five years at a Halifax County plant that makes packaged fruits and vegetables that don't need refrigeration.

Gov. Beverly Perdue's office announced on Thursday that Empire Foods Inc. was promised a $400,000 grant from state taxpayers. The company plans to invest $2.5 million in the next five years.

The jobs are expected to pay an average annual wage of more than $28,000 at a plant outside the town of Halifax.

Empire Foods will use technology developed by North Carolina State University to produce shelf-stable food products. It will produce fruits and vegetables targeting military and restaurant customers.
