ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) is planning to cut more salaried jobs as slumping travel demand depresses revenue and rising fuel prices raise costs.
"Because of the severity of this economic downturn, we also must eliminate additional salaried positions beyond the management and administrative jobs already reduced over the last 18 months," the company's chief executive and president said in a memo to employees on Thursday.
Richard Anderson, the CEO, and Edward Bastian, president, did not indicate how many jobs that Delta, which acquired Northwest last year, was looking to cut but it added that costs would also be pared through budget reductions.
"We do not expect our revenues to significantly improve through the remainder of the year," the memo said.
Delta said last month that it no longer expects to turn a profit for this year and added it would be taking a hard look at its business as it seeks to cope with declining demand.
The carrier has eliminated thousands of jobs in the past year through voluntary exit packages.
