Daimler Trucks North America has laid off more than 2,600 workers since last spring. The company, which produces Freightliners, is now calling 650 employees back to work at its Rowan County, NC, plant.

The Salisbury Post quotes an official at Daimler as saying the recall is in response to an increase in customer orders for the Class 8 Cascadia from the Freightliner line.

The plant used to operate three shifts, but after a round of layoffs in June only one shift remained. Daimler officials said the returning workers will operate a partial second shift.
