Employment in the non-residential building construction trades in the U.S. fell by 5,900 jobs in July, slightly better than the average of 6,200 jobs lost in each of the previous three months, according to a U.S. Labor Department report issued Friday.

Between July 2009 and July 2008, employment in the sector declined by 99,800 jobs, or 12.1 percent, to 727,800 positions nationwide. The figures were cited in a press release issued Friday by the Associated Builders and Contractors.

The full benefits of the economic stimulus package haven’t been felt yet in the construction trades, Anirban Basu, ABC’s chief economist, said in the release.

“Many nonresidential construction activities tend to lag behind broader economic cycles, including commercial/office construction,” Basu said. “However, the impacts of the stimulus package passed in February should become significantly clearer during the next six to 12 months, and this will help nonresidential construction employment stabilize during that period.”

U.S. unemployment inched down to 9.4 percent in July, compared with 9.5 percent in June.
