GP Closing Bellingham Mill With 210 Jobs

BELLINGHAM, WA. -- Georgia Pacific say it will completely close its tissue mill on the Bellingham waterfront by December, cutting 210 jobs.

The company says rising costs make the mill uncompetitive.

A mill has been located at the site since the 1920s and at one point it employed more than 1,000 workers. A pulp mill closed in 2001.

Georgia Pacific sold the 137-acre Bellingham Bay site to the Port of Bellingham in 2005 for one dollar. The Port is responsible for cleaning up all contamination on the site.
