GRAND RAPIDS - Nearly 160 people lost their jobs Friday when Synergis Technologies closed the doors of their three locations without notice.

In a late Friday afternoon statement, Synergis President and CEO Jay Groendyke said, "This is a very sad and difficult day for all of us at Synergis Technologies Group. Throughout the past several years, it has been increasingly challenging to eke out a living in this industry and in Michigan. The impact on globalization has made it difficult to obtain new business and compete on pricing."

The company had three area locations on 36th and 44th Streets and on Bristol Avenue. 24 hour news 8 went to all of the locations for reaction to the closure but everybody we asked declined a comment. We saw a "for sale" sign at the 44th Street facility.

Some of the employees will continue to work for a short time as the business is liquidated. Synergis, founded in 1982, processed, engineered and manufactured line, transfer and progressive dies.
