Census Workers Just Doing Their Jobs

Those people you may see on your property are supposed to be there. People hired temporarily by the U.S. Census Bureau are doing preliminary work for the 2010 count. They are using handheld computers with maps to verify and list structures, including obtaining GPS coordinate for each location.

After receiving a handful of complaints from residents complaining about people milling around on people’s property, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this with the Census Bureau. The actual door-to-door 2010 Census does not start until April 1, 2010, the sheriff’s office said.

Pamela Page-Bellis, a media specialist with the Census bureau said all employees should have their ID with them and in clear view. They should also carry their driver’s license so law enforcement can verify them, and, workers should also all be carrying their black canvas bags with the Census 2010 logo and computer.

The pre-census workers will ask for personal information but may need to confirm the address with the resident. Census officials told CCSO the employees will never ask for a Social Security number, any personal banking information or your legal status as a resident.
