U.S. telecom company Cbeyond Inc wants to build out a new call center and training facility alongside its headquarters at Interstate 75, creating more than 600 new jobs in Cobb County and throughout metro Atlanta.

By 2013, Cbeyond (News - Alert) aims to create more than 1,400 jobs locally – good news in nation where hundreds of thousands of people have been laid off because of this down economy.

Job opportunities will range from sales, customer care, Information Technology, operations and marketing – virtually all areas of the organization, as the company expands and builds its business over the next three to four years.

“Considering the difficult times facing the U.S. economy, having the opportunity to bring much needed economic development to Atlanta is gratifying, and is a testament to our business model. Georgia’s talent pool is robust and those future employees will allow us to grow to the next level,” saidJim Geiger ( News - Alert), chief executive officer of Cbeyond.

Born in Atlanta in 2000 with only 15 employees, Cbeyond now employs more than 700 people in Metro Atlanta alone and more than 1,600 across the country.

The company, built to serve the unique technology and communications needs of small businesses in major metropolitan areas across the country, was recently named by Forbes magazine as the sixth-fastest growing technology company in the country.

Cbeyond says it now provides service to more than 44,000 such businesses across 12 markets.

“Atlanta is considered to be a hub of innovation in America,” said Hans Gant, Senior Vice President of Economic Development for the Metro Atlanta Chamber. “Cbeyond’s expansion solidifies metro Atlanta’s growing reputation in communications and information technology, and will help build and support metro Atlanta’s small businesses and entrepreneurs.”

Cbeyond handles long-distance voice, broadband Internet, mobile, broadband laptop access, voicemail, email as well as web hosting for thousands of small businesses across the United States. The company reported first-quarter net income of $59,000, down from $1 million during the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter increased 22 percent to $98.3 million.
