Boeing plans to cut 1,000 jobs from its defense division, including some employees in California.

Jim Albaugh, president and chief executive Boeing's St. Louis-based Integrated Defense Systems, told workers in an internal message this week that the unit will eliminate 1,000 jobs due to Pentagon budget cuts.

The affected workers would start getting their notices later this week, said Dan Beck, a Boeing spokesman.

He said he couldn’t yet release the number of workers losing their jobs in the defense unit in St. Louis, Seattle and California.

Most of the job cuts are related to the restructuring of the Future Combat Systems Program, a $160 billion Army modernization program, and to cuts to the ground-based missile defense program, Beck said.

Jim McNerney, CEO of Chicago-based Boeing, said in January that 10,000 jobs would be cut companywide this year through layoffs and attrition, including 4,500 from the commercial airplanes unit.

Beck said he couldn’t say whether the 1,000 job cuts are in addition to the 10,000 because the company is in a quiet period before it releases its earnings July 22.

Boeing IDS has operations throughout Southern California.
