AT&T Inc. will be laying off 4,600 workers nationwide to operate more efficiently, the telecommunications company announced Friday in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Walt Sharp, a spokesperson for AT&T, said the company is not breaking down the job cuts geographically and affected employees are in the process of being notified, which does not rule out the Dayton area.
AT&T (NYSE:T) said the job reductions are the next step in streamlining the company's operations particularly in non-customer facing positions such as wireline operations, telecom and corporate staff groups such as finance.
Sharp said the company expects its employee base to remain fairly stable as it has more than 300,000 employees across the country and added 7,000 positions in 2007.
He said the company is still hiring in growth positions such as wireless and Uverse, AT&T's TV product.
San Antonio-based AT&T is a global communications holding company with 1,500 workers in the Dayton area. It provides telephone and Internet service in the Dayton region.
