Bass Pro Shops' three-day job fair this week attracted 2,835 applicants - many more than the outdoor retailer expected.
The applicants are vying for 300 jobs - 100 of them full time - at the Bass Pro store being built off Bass and New Forsyth roads near Interstate 75 in north Bibb County.
Monday, the first day of the fair, 1,238 people applied for jobs.
General manager Bruce Henderson said he expected a total of 2,000 applicants, and was surprised at the huge number who showed up every day.
"That was a huge turnout," he said. "The last two days did not back off like I thought they would. It was great. We were impressed with the quality (of the applicants), and we will do follow up interviews over the next few weeks."
The Bass Pro store will be the anchor for a 400,000-square-foot retail center known as Market Place at Bass being developed by Macon-based Fickling & Co. real estate firm.
Bass Pro officials will be conducting interviews with applicants during the next two weeks and expect to make job offers by the end of the month, Henderson said. New hires would begin work by Sept. 1.
